Robert "Bob" Young
Bob Young has been a banker since 1961. He started his career as an assistant bank examiner and then worked his way up to cashier and then on to management within several bank systems before founding Alpine Banks of Colorado in January 1973. Young is now the Chairman of 38 banks, and his company has been named one of the best places to work in Colorado two years in a row (3rd in 2008 and 5th in 2009) by ColoradoBiz.
Young describes himself as a giving individual, which was recognized when, in 1995, he was named Colorado’s Outstanding Philanthropist by the state chapter of the National Philanthropy Day committee. In 1997, the Community Resource Center honored Bob Young and another individual as Western Colorado Philanthropists of the Year for their charitable giving in the community, most notably to Colorado Mountain College. In November, 2008 Bob Young received a major award by the Council for Resource Development, for his philanthropy toward community colleges. Alpine Bank makes philanthropy and community involvement a central part of its mission. All employees are given 24 hours of paid volunteer time each year and the bank is a major donor and supporter of local non-profits, having been members of Colorado’s 2% Club for many years. Young is considered a major philanthropic force in all of his bank locations, and he puts emphasis on youth, literacy, scholarship, and giving back to his communities in a meaningful way.
In addition to Young’s philanthropic involvement, he has served on many boards and has been involved with numerous organizations. He was appointed chairman of the State Banking Board by Governor Roy Romer and was reappointed to four successive terms. He is past President and Chairman of the Colorado Bankers Association, past Chairman of the Colorado Student Obligation Bond Authority, and past Chairman of the Iliff School of Theology Foundation Board. Young is a founder and current member of Colorado Independent Bankers. Recently, the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs announced that their new cancer center would be named to honor Young and one other local for their generosity.
Young’s hard work and positive contributions have earned him many awards and recognitions including Citizen of the Year by the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce in 1999 and the Athena Award by Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association in 2006. He received an honorary degree from Colorado Mountain College in 2009 in acknowledgement of Alpine Banks’ many years of service. Additionally, Alpine Bank was a finalist in the large businesses category in ColoradoBiz’s Top Company Award for Family Friendly Business Practices in 2010 and won Colorado Parent Magazine’s Top Company for Family Friendly Business Practices, placing 2nd in 2000, 1st in 2001 and 2nd in 2003.

One of Young’s passions is sports car racing, and he is the 10-time Rocky Mountain Division National Champion. He is active in numerous outdoor activities including skiing, golf, offshore fishing and boating.
