robert newman
Robert “Bob” Newman is a visionary entrepreneur and, along with his wife Judi, a major philanthropist for arts and education institutions in Denver.
With beginnings as a computer programmer in the 1960s, Newman began his own business as a software designer and developer for smaller computers. In 1978, he merged with another small firm to form J.D. Edwards & Company (JDE), which grew to almost 6,000 employees in 15 countries. During the 1990s, JDE became the fourth-largest application software company in the world, with approximately $1 billion in annual revenues. When JDE went public in 1997, Newman left to pursue other interests, although he remained a director and advisor until JDE merged with Peoplesoft in August 2001.
Currently, Newman owns and helps manage a venture capital company called Greenwood Gulch Ventures, investing primarily in technology startups. Together, the Newmans are key supporters of the Newman Center for Performing Arts at the University of Denver, the Newman Center for Arts Education at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and the Freyer-Newman Center at Denver Botanic Gardens.
